Most people would never pick up RAMMER JAMMER YELLOW HAMMER, which is a shame. Although the premise seems pedestrian -- write about how rabid University of Alabama football fans follow their team in RVs to every game -- it works. Warren St. John chronicles the passion of Alabama fans, whose very existence centers upon their team's weekly gridiron performance. RAMMER JAMMER YELLOW HAMMER is very funny, but it is also a superb character study, which completely engages the reader. Michael Kramer's reading makes the book even better. Kramer captures St. John's love of his beloved Crimson Tide, and his ability to slip in and out of a Southern drawl highlights a memorable performance. This is not so much a football book as a surprisingly thoughtful examination of what most would consider a lowbrow subject. D.J.S.
