In this audiobook, singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile recounts her path to success. Carlile describes her childhood in a town close to Seattle, leaving nothing out with respect to her childhood traumas, family dysfunction, or sexuality. At 16, when she wanted to be baptized, she went through all the preparations, but at the last minute her pastor refused to perform the sacrament because she is gay. This trauma propelled her later years as she searched for faith and love through her music. As narrator, Carlile's presentation is easygoing, and she ends each chapter singing a song.
