ENJOYING OPERA

These tapes--featuring discussions of La Bohème, Carmen, La Traviata and The Magic Flute--could go a long way toward demystifying opera. Using numerous excerpts from each opera, Harris examines each in terms of its key elements: libretto, plot and music. He also comments on the performance history and cultural background of each opera, giving the listener keen insight into the genre. Dale Harris, who lectures regularly on opera at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has the perfect, cultured voice one would expect from an opera commentator. It’s easy to feel the enthusiasm he brings to his lectures. A booklet is included, which summarizes each opera and lists the musical credits. P.B.J.
