At first, this audiobook appears to be a simple whodunit, but that is not the case. Narrator Chris Sharpes smoothly voices Alex Bryn, a one-album wonder who is now scratching out a living as a music critic. Alex's life is turned upside down by the reappearance of Ciara, a singer who is his ex-girlfriend from long ago. The character, along with her dazzling jazz performance, is portrayed by Helly Tree. Following Ciara's suspicious death, Alex becomes the primary suspect of an inspector who is effectively portrayed in a thick Scottish brogue by Derek McEwan. Is Alex's review of Ciara's performance a manifestation of his loss--or his guilt? That is the question that lingers after the curtain falls on this brief but engaging audiobook.
