Christopher Kay captures the tension in this gripping WWII drama. In the autumn of 1943 the British Navy dispatches a flotilla to destroy a German submarine tender. In a secondary plot, we follow the love lives of the principal characters. The novel features frequent flashbacks to events that occurred days, months, and years before the main action. Never once does Kay lose us; instead, he delivers these asides in a distinctly different style from that of his reading of the main action. Also, his naval personnel sound exactly right; their varying accents remind us the British Navy in WWII encompassed all segments of society. This is an exciting story beautifully read.
