This is not your average travelogue, and it's certainly no picnic. But listeners who appreciate bent humor, whether or not they ever set foot in Austin, Texas, will enjoy this witty walk. Texas politician, country singer, and mystery writer Kinky Friedman takes the listener on a tour through his favorite city, the capital of the 28th state. Along the way, he shows off his favorite burger bars, beer halls, and parks. He narrates the city's history, peppering it with characters like Sam Houston, O. Henry, Janis Joplin, and Willie Nelson, as well as the inordinate number of serial killers who passed through Austin's streets. The Kinkster's style is dry, and his reading voice is no more melodic than his singing voice. Gravelly and cigar-stained, his reading isn't pretty, but it's pretty darned good.
