Caroline Paul's account of becoming one of San Francisco's first women firefighters contains the emotional, physical and mental challenges faced in such a situation. Capturing the intensity of each aspect of Paul's transition from new recruit to veteran squad member, Parker ably dramatizes her personal changes, as well as the changes in the firefighters who must work with her. Parker recreates the mounting excitement and terrible sadness of the fire scenes with superb clarity and realistic emotion.
