TIMECODE OF A FACE

The author/narrator shares revelations that occurred while she was engaged in the experiment of observing her face in the mirror for three hours. As narrator, Ozeki has a clear, easy voice with a varied inflection and pace that are in tune with her commentary. This brief memoir is filled with stories of Ozeki's experiences of growing up half-Caucasian and half Japanese, including details about the making of Japanese Noh masks, her relationships with her mother and father, and her journey to becoming a Zen Buddhist priest. There are many lessons to be learned as Ozeki reveals the details of her face and her life. In the author's note, she explains that she deliberately chose to use the racist language she was exposed to as a child so as not to obscure the harm of such language.
