The renowned Cambridge scholar of the period knows how to weave the multifaceted story so it is both interesting and current. Narrator John McDonough has exactly the kind of professorial voice you'd expect for this account. At times, one even imagines one is listening to the author himself, so thoroughly does McDonough internalize the text. He reads slowly enough for us to follow the events but rapidly enough to make the people remarkable and real. Much of this story has certainly been told before.
