Happier to kill a miscreant than to arrest one, he happens to be a mite smarter than the good--AND evil-doing--Old West citizens. His shrewdness serves him better than his gun when a town hires him to oversee the hanging of a jailed bandito, whose ruthless gang plots to free him. Ferrone makes expert use of the tense situation, sly humor, vivid characterization, and excellent dialogue of this suspenseful Western.
