Noted historical fiction writer Dunnett does not scrimp on detail in this third volume of the House of Niccolo series. Christopher Kay's performance is impressive as the scenes vary from sprawling sea battles to intimate confrontations. Kay also creates voices for a large number of unusual characters, ranging from angry stepdaughters to grand commanders. Each character has a distinctive voice, such as courtesan Primaflora's breathy falsetto or the demanding tone of queenly Carlotta. Kay's delivery also reflects the worries and weariness of battle-scarred Nicholas. This absorbing story has the satisfying sense of history coming alive; the clashes of fifteenth-century trade wars over sugar and textiles are as intriguing as 21st-century corporate schemes.
