GROUND ZERO A Sonic Memorial Soundwalk

Earphones Award Winner

by | Read by Paul Auster

Contemporary Culture • 1 hr. • Audio Program • © 2004

A series of NPR pieces remembering the 9/11 World Trade Center attack has been reworked into an audio guide for a walking tour. Real voices and sounds include a collage of sound taken from a tape recording made that morning, the words of a Lebanese man who escaped the wreckage but lost his 26-year-old son, and a Mohawk ironworker’s reaction to working at Ground Zero. Paul Auster’s commentary bridges the pieces nicely, providing any necessary information while letting interviews and sounds carry the tour. Since it was originally done for radio, this production works well for the audio listener; it might be a good idea for those going to New York to listen before their tour. J.A.S.
