FOLKS CALL ME APPLESEED JOHN

by | Read by Tom Stechschulte

Children Ages 4-8 • 15 min. • Unabridged • © 1995

Johnny Appleseed's brother, Nathaniel, comes to visit him in the wild frontier of what is now Pittsburgh. Nathaniel is unprepared for life in the wilderness. Johnny embarks on a wild odyssey to provide for his brother, only to find that, upon returning, his brother has been taught how to fend for himself by the best teachers. My children loved this, and grown-up children will also enjoy it. Stechschulte's performance is very good; he reads in a low, resonant voice that is not raspy. A slight nasal twang adds to the effect of being "backwoodsish" without falling into a false drawl. The only drawback to this work is that the children see neither the illustrations nor the storyteller. Nevertheless, this is a delightful recording.
