While the battles of Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa are well known, the slaughter on the coral island of Peleliu in 1944 is virtually unknown. These men landed amid poor intelligence and slugged their way across the island for the next month, winning a victory that many veterans of Iwo Jima said was the worst fight of the war. This gripping and personal story of combat is read with verve by Patrick Lawlor. He is delightfully expressive when performing voices and dialogue.
