ELEANOR Her Secret Journey

As the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a mother, a daughter-in-law, an activist, and a friend, Eleanor Roosevelt became known as “the first lady of the world,” and deservedly so. Actress Jean Stapleton (of “All in the Family” fame) beautifully captures the qualities and dualities of Mrs. Roosevelt’s complex personality. Stapleton’s unusual voice is put to great use as she becomes Eleanor Roosevelt, particularly in the period of conflict between her public persona and her private torment during the early years of her married life. L.A. Theatre Works’ presentation gives full measure to Stapleton’s versatile solo performance yet leaves listeners wanting even more facts and emotional insights on this fascinating woman.
