DIALOGUES OF THE DEAD

by | Read by Shaun Dooley

Mystery & Suspense • 16.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2001

In this 2001 mystery, Yorkshire policemen Dalziel and Pascoe receive letters written by a probable killer before his crimes. The writer is discursive as well as murderous, but the excellent Shaun Dooley never lets the listener's attention flag. Careful pacing, telling pauses, and an intriguing accent keep us engaged. Added to that are revealing portrayals of Hill's core characters--Dalziel has rarely sounded ruder or cleverer, and Pascoe is a study in upwardly mobile politesse and patience. Even the minor characters, such as a cheerful mechanic shoved off a bridge, are telling audio portraits. A must listen for fans of British procedurals.
