This is a superior book that should appeal to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Though the subtitle suggests an emphasis on the new pope, George Weigel is poetically evocative when describing the recently deceased pope, whom he clearly venerates. Nonetheless, Weigel addresses the historical, political, and spiritual implications of Benedict XVI, delivering his points in measured tones that blend the patience of a true scholar with the passion of a devoted worshiper. It is refreshing when someone can let emotions fill his voice without clouding his perspective. Also welcome are the touches of humor and frequent pauses with which Weigel leavens his narrative.
