PAPERWHITE NARCISSUS

This entertaining mystery set on Martha’s Vineyard is the fifth in a series featuring the tough, charming 92-year-old sleuth, Victoria Trumbull. The arrogant editor of the local paper fires Trumbull as a writer but then grudgingly hires her to find out who’s sending him obituaries following the murders of people close to him. Davina Porter has a smooth voice and expressive style, but her British accent makes her an odd choice for the Cape Cod setting, with its traditional New England characters. The disconnect between voice and setting may occasionally distract listeners. Nevertheless, Porter is a skilled narrator, and the story is engaging.
