CHICKS WITH STICKS It’s a Purl Thing

Friendship anxiety, obsession with boyfriends and potential boyfriends, image issues, and problems with zany families abound—as the lives of Scottie and her three pals move between high energy and deep despondency. The twist comes from the girls’ passion for knitting. They knit almost everywhere they go. Liz Morton voices a youthful Scottie, changing from a tone of confidence to one of tentativeness as quickly as Scottie does. Her intonations of teens talking among themselves are perfect, and her delivery of them speaking to parents sounds as aloof as the girls imagine themselves to be. Alice, the proprietor of the local knitting shop, is as warm and enveloping as her hand-knit creations. Teenaged knitters and non-knitters alike will listen eagerly.
