Christopher Kay meets the challenge of this complex historical novel set in the fifteenth century with a fresh and engaged narration. In the fifth in the House of Niccolo series, Niccolo is determined to build a trading empire. The reason he plans to have the center of that empire in Scotland is a mystery to his business partners but makes perfect sense to him. As Niccolo travels widely, Kay draws on his broad repertoire of accents. His characterizations are sensitive to class distinction and rank. He also shows facility with the political undertones and intrigue that Niccolo sometimes blunders into and other times moves adroitly within.
