When Massachusetts State Investigator Win Garano is called home from forensic training in Knoxville to take on DA Monique Lamont's new crime-solving initiative, he is annoyed--until a shocking crime plunges him onto a tangled path to solve cases both old and new. Kate Reading narrates with a strength and immediacy well suited to this novel and its characters. The DA's biting sarcasm and Win's frustrations are voiced resolutely. Sikes, the Knoxville investigator drawn into the case, is characterized with an expert regional accent. Reading's ability to pinpoint the story's emotions helps overcome the novel's shortcomings and should help make it less of a disappointment for Cornwell fans.
