Maybe it's just part of the deal. Perhaps when you've been at the highest levels of political power, you can't hide the feeling that you've become smarter than other people. But the uplifting point worth hearing is that each of us has the power to express and live values that, while irritating the prevailing culture, are good for our children and our country.
