John Brown's zeal, as conveyed by Michael Prichard, is understated as he delivers the steady cadence of Carton's biography. Opening with the tragic events at Harper's Ferry? where Brown sought to launch a large-scale rebellion against slavery, then delving into Brown's youth, education, marriages, and fatherhood (of 20 children), Prichard's narration depicts his character's evolution from tanner and Underground Railroad supporter to radical abolitionist. Prichard's attempt to sing hymns voiced by Brown's first wife is one of the few off-putting moments in a steady-voiced narration. Even with full knowledge of the story's end and the tar-and-feathering of Brown's character by history books, the listener remains riveted.
