THE WHISTLING SEASON

This coming-of-age novel details the hardships, humor, and moments of discovery shared by widower Oliver Milliron and his three sons. Jonathan Hogan perfectly reflects Doig's enthusiastic affection for the gorgeous landscape, colorful characters, and dramatic events of life in Montana at the beginning of the twentieth century. While Hogan is at his best portraying the male characters, he valiantly tries to find unique female tones for Rose Llewellyn, the family's new housekeeper from Minneapolis, whose ad proudly proclaims: "can't cook but doesn't bite."
