In this serialized radio play about the Fifth Crusade by an America-born actor-writer-producer living in Ireland, a young nobleman’s conscience is sorely tried on the battlefield and as a prisoner/guest of the Saracens. There is nothing novel or distinguished about the broad characterizations and heavy-handed anti-fundamentalist message, but these faults are overwhelmed by the sheer gusto of the production. The soundscape is complex and sweeping, the writing lyrical, the performances uniformly fine. Sound, voice, and music are expertly orchestrated, beautifully paced, forceful, and dramatic. Gregg and his Crazy Dog Audio Theatre troupe depart from their wonted fantasy-satires and show their potential for becoming a significant force in serious audio drama. Y.R.
