Set in the Middle Ages, this sequel to the Newbery Medal winner CRISPIN AND THE CROSS OF LEAD finds young Crispin and his kindly protector, Bear, on the run from members of Bear's former brotherhood. Ron Keith's warm delivery produces characters with distinctive identities and clearly illuminated personalities. The story is performed in an unusual fashion. When the first-person narrator relates what is happening or what he is thinking, he employs the voice of an older man, as if the character is reflecting upon his earlier experience. When in actual conversation, his voice is that of a young boy. Though curious at first, this technique allows listeners to easily follow the dialogue. The engrossing performance fascinates as religion, politics, and familial love intersect Crispin's life in unexpected ways. M.H.N. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 07]
