Fred Berman embraces the energetic mystery-solving of neighborhood hero Joe Sherlock. Berman needs this energy as Keane's short stories are filled with eccentric characters and nonstop action as the goofy boy sleuth tracks the evil that lurks in his neighbor Mr. Asher's toolshed, recovers his lost, gout-stricken dad, and tries to stop Mr. Asher's mother from filling the air with her flatulent "air biscuits." And that's only the first mystery. Berman goes on with the mildly disgusting humor that 7-10-year-olds love in the production's two other whodunits, as Joe searches for a missing diamond and the cause of an unusual amount of dog poop.
