Contrary to the impressions of Disney and Fox, the Greek Hercules (Heracles) cycle recounts the tragic life and triumphant death of a semi-divine hero who was much more than a strong man. Having to endure humiliating labors and harrowing adventures, he strengthened his character, not his muscles, and was ultimately rewarded by his elevation to Olympus. The tales for children on this tape, read by the stars of TV's "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," more accurately reflect the powerful Greek myths than the snickering Fox program. Indeed, considering the sex and violence of the original, Evslin has done a wonderful job of rendering the events and resonances suitably for young listeners. In addition, he's contributed some beautiful writing, simple, witty and musical. Even more astonishing, Sorbo and especially Hurst, Hollywood hunks with distinctly modern personalities and limited technical resources, read with great charm, drama and expression. Producer Craig Braginsky has contributed some appropriate music to bridge the stories. Modest, unpretentious and absorbing. Y.R.
