This is Susan Isaacs at or near the top of her game, by which one means you can expect this book to be exciting, funny, and delightfully out of round, all of which is true. The protagonist, Katie Schottland, who has a great job, husband, and life, has a secret obsession; she was once fired by the CIA, and she has never known why. A long lost acquaintance surfaces, promises to tell her why, then disappears, and we're off to the races. While Randye Kaye's performance is high spirited, she carries her preconception of Katie as a wisecracker too far. Even the most committed of professional wits uses a normal voice sometimes, especially when in danger or otherwise in serious straits. Still, it's a highly entertaining read.
