This whirlwind story draws the listener into time and place, small-town Tennesse during the Depression, and the story of two sexy, smart, strong-willed women who prove their place in the world. Narrator Susan Ericksen doesn't ladle on the accents but carefully creates just the right confident tone for the raven-haired and blue-eyed Wilde sisters, Pearl and Kat. The sisters share more than physical traits and a forceful disposition--they have the same bad luck with men. Ericksen sets the languid tempo of the story in the first scene in which Pearl finds Kat in the springhouse wearing her favorite pair of shoes and her fiancé. Pearl leaves town, travels the world, and returns three years later to exact her revenge. The novel and narrator Susan Ericksen create one wild ride.
