TALKING JAZZ An Oral History

by | Read by Various Narrators

Saxophonist Johnny Griffin said, "Jazz is music made by and for people who have chosen to feel good, in spite of circumstances." This compilation of over 60 interviews with jazz musicians is a remarkable oral history of the people and the circumstances behind the music. Interviewer Ben Sidran, former host of the NPR jazz show "Sidran on Record," skillfully elicits stories and musings from his guests that are funny, poignant, and always fascinating. Included is a beautiful booklet of photos and background information, though a more thorough audio introduction to the interviews would be helpful for listening while driving. Also, aside from occasional samples, the music itself is noticeably absent. But overall, this is an outstanding audio program for anyone interested in jazz.
