OVER THE MOON

Once again, Jean Ure captures the pulse of contemporary girls. Here she takes on a rarely confronted issue--the very pretty girl. Scarlett examines her recent past and cringes at her own (and her dad's) preoccupation with her looks. Thank goodness Scarlett's mom and best friend Hattie keep her grounded. Narrator Clare Corbett skillfully captures adult and young voices. The story balances its serious look at shallowness and overemphasis on appearance with a sincere concern for the welfare of others, especially as portrayed by Scarlett's mother. After Scarlett's mom leaves home on a trip, she really grows up and helps her dad understand her mom better. This fun, timely story packs subtle lessons.
