THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE

Narrated by ANGELA'S ASHES author Frank McCourt, this edition of The Elements of Style is a joy. Strunk and White’s classic guide to writing clearer, more effective prose seems an unlikely candidate for audio—it’s largely a list of rules and examples of good and bad usage—but this production works well. THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE has long held a nearly scriptural appeal for devotees, and with McCourt at the mike, delivering the book in his rolling Irish brogue, it’s easier than ever to hear the voice of God, or something like it, behind its sensible advice. Purists will want to know that this reading is based on the fourth edition, the first revision created without input from either Strunk or White. M.G.
