Published in 1906, this tale of high romance and intrigue, set during the bloodiest days of the French Revolution, is the first of several sequels to The Scarlet Pimpernel. It has aged well. Johanna Ward is fun to listen to. She puts the author’s rather melodramatic prose in the best possible light by reading with restraint, gravity and authority. She also renders fluently the frequent names and phrases in French. Although character voices are not highly differentiated, it’s always clear who’s speaking and how he or she feels. Good production values top off the welcome reappearance of an old friend. J.N. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: MAR 95]
