This fascinating work of nonfiction has been updated to include the work of the rescue dogs who helped search for victims of 9/11. Meticulously researched, the subject matter--on the use of animals in war throughout history--may be difficult for some animal lovers to swallow as the author minces no words in her descriptions. But Patricia Gallimore's calming British voice tempers the graphic details somewhat. Gallimore keeps listeners involved as she delivers Cooper's examination of a subject most people prefer not to think about. Though the stories of animal bravery may be tough going for some listeners, this spare but well-done production bears witness to the important contributions made by animals in warfare through the ages.
