VILLETTE

by | Read by Joseph Fiennes, James Laurensen, Carolyn McCormick, and a Full Cast

Audio Theater • 3 hrs. • Audio Program • © 1999

VILLETTE is the story of Lucy Snowe, a young woman with no money or connections who makes her own way teaching at a French boarding school. This full-cast performance uses music and other production elements to give the story an eerie sound, fitting for the themes of the book. The cast, which includes Joseph Fiennes and Catherine McCormick, gives an excellent performance, and the voices are distinct enough to avoid any confusion of the characters for the listener. The dramatization at times makes the story difficult to follow, and some of the scene changes are abrupt. But the talent of the cast and the quality of the production make up for these shortcomings. Overall, this is an engaging version of a Brontë classic. K.F. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine [Published: APR/ MAY 08]
