Two story lines unfold in this gripping novel: A family in Los Angeles copes with the aftermath of a shooting, and a widower in Montana is being terrorized by an unknown force. Christopher Lane's pace perfectly captures the acute, restless fear that eventually encompasses all the characters. When the two plots converge, the intensity picks up and Lane moves from a slow and steady delivery to a frantic and desperate tone. Particularly strong are his characterizations of a young boy and a Montana lawyer, who is given a kind drawl. This suspenseful story is riveting, thanks to an author who knows how to deliver suspense and a seasoned narrator who understands how to sustain tension.
