Brewer spins a "mostly true" meandering tale of how he came to lose--and find again--his beloved golden retriever, Cormac. The author's pet goes missing after a thunderstorm in Alabama when Brewer is away on a book tour, and the book details Brewer's search, aided by friends and family, to track Cormac down. (The dog ultimately ends up in Connecticut.) Brewer's gentle Southern voice adds charm to the listening--part of the story's pleasure lies in his colorful characterizations of Fairhope, Alabama, and his Southern friends, family, and neighbors. Though his laid-back pace is almost too slow in places--some chapters seem to include lots of detail for little reason--Brewer's delivery of the suspenseful search and his ultimate reunion with his dog is genuinely absorbing.
