If you can't attend one of Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön's five-week retreats on meditation, this production is the next best thing. Chödrön teaches this introductory course with the same humor and compassion that marks all her work. Acknowledging her audience's often drowsy, fearful, distracted, or self-abusive tendencies, she offers ways to deepen the experience of meditation for each listener. In five guided sessions, Chödrön focuses on different aspects of meditation, including such matters as mindfulness training and physical awareness. Also included are assignments to practice during the week to make one's meditations more intentional. Since Chödrön is recorded live as she leads an audience through actual meditations, listeners should expect some long silences between her occasional remarks. Her down-to-earth voice and approach make this a wonderful production. J.C.G. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2008]
