UPSTREAM The Ascendance of American Conservatism

by | Read by Jeff Riggenbach

Contemporary Culture • 16.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2008

Regnery's history of the American conservative movement is very much an insider's point of view. Both he and his father have been active players in the movement, helping to promote its ideals and meeting many of its major figures. Narrator Jeff Riggenbach is always clear, and his rhythms align well with Regnery's prose. However, when recounting events from Regnery's childhood, such as his first meeting with William Buckley, his tone remains impersonal. As a result, the account loses some of its potential. Likewise, Regnery's story of conservatism is passionately committed—he strongly believes in his ideals—but Riggenbach sometimes doesn't enter fully into the spirit of these peak moments.
