An invitation has been issued to the couples in this book to attend a lavish ball. During the four months prior to the event, we’re treated to an overview of their marriages and how the couples endure them. The reader of the story is also the writer, and she certainly knows what she wants each person to say, and we always know who is speaking. Even though her voice peters out with the effort of lengthy reading sessions, the overall effect is pleasant, and the listener is left with a satisfying story to remember. J.
