A MORNING FOR FLAMINGOS

James Lee Burke’s entertaining 1990 novel is made even better by Mark Hammer’s measured Southern drawl, which allows the listener to savor every moment. At the heart of the action is detective Dave Robicheaux, who is shot by Jimmie Lee Boggs during a prison transfer gone bad. From there, Robicheaux leaves his small town and travels to New Orleans, beginning a journey that involves the DEA and a host of memorable characters. Burke's dialogue is superb, and Hammer provides each character with a distinct persona while pacing the story appropriately.
