"Selected Shorts"--heard weekly on NPR stations--compiles stories with the general theme of "Wondrous Women." Stories include Kim Edwards's "The Story of My Life," read by Holly Hunter; Teolinda Gersào's "The Red Fox Fur Coat," read by Kathleen Chalfant; Allan Gurganus's "It Had Wings," read by Marian Seldes, David Haynes's "Taking Miss Kezee to the Polls," read by Michael Genet, D. H. Lawrence's "The Horse Dealer's Daughter," read by Jon DeVries, and Richard Russo's "The Whore's Child," read by Harold Gould. As usual, the collection is nicely eclectic, with a sprinkling of well-known names and stories that run the gamut of emotion from funny to tragic. The D.H. Lawrence story is perhaps the only off-note in the collection, which, overall, is well presented and satisfying. Fans of the short story may well find a new author to pursue in this set.
