THE LAW OF SIMILARS

by | Read by David Birney

Fiction • 5 hrs. • Abridged • © 1999

In a nearly perfect performance, actor/director David Birney reads Chris Bohjalian's tale of a state prosecutor who risks his career and his home life to protect his homeopath-turned-lover. In an unlikely story full of twists, turns, and legal and medical details, Birney keeps the listener glued to her seat as the plot slowly builds to the breaking point. Scores of details surrounding conventional and alternative medicine remain at the forefront, but Birney expertly captures the humanity, loneliness, paranoia and eventual panic of main character Leland Fowler. While Birney fails to effectively differentiate each character, he does change his cadence and tone just enough to keep the listener on track. Most notably, Birney brings great depth to the characters in the novel. H.L.S. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 99]
