Maureen O'Brien narrates this comedic mystery, written in 1932, about a haunted house complete with resident ghost. With a gentle voice, O’Brien creates vivid characterizations of a husband and wife, two siblings, and an aunt who inherit an aged English country manor. When the family moves in, greeting their luck with delighted anticipation, O'Brien captures their immediate chagrin at the lack of “mod cons.” Although a chilling murder occurs, and the suspenseful story is filled with hidden staircases and moldering crypts, it’s also laugh-out-loud funny. O'Brien's crisp English accent suits the period, but clearer distinction between the characters' voices would help listeners keep up with who’s who.
