Mystery & Suspense • 8 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1993

There's a "been there, done that" feel to this production of mystery writer Robert Crais's 1994 novel. Narrator Mel Foster plays LA detective Elvis Cole and his bad-ass cohort, Joe Pike, with a terse and acerbic tone that draws listeners into this world of "bad cops and worse cops." In a story of corruption and murder, scenes involving Cole's dealings with South Central gangs are the most fun, and Pike's taciturn demeanor is always chilling. Fans who want to follow the evolution of Elvis and Joe should give a listen for the clipped dialogue and back story. Those looking for more engaging titles should check out the author's more recent mysteries. R.O. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/NOV 08]
