What makes this true-crime story unusual is the relationship between New York State Police Senior Investigator James Horton and Gary Evans, burglar, con man, ladies' man, and serial murderer. Phelps traces the guarded friendship that grows between the two men, beginning in 1985, when Evans becomes Horton's confidential informant, and continuing for 13 years. J. Charles's narration is strong and consistently engaging. Even in the overly long, sometimes repetitious sections common to the true-crime genre, Charles maintains listener attention. He uses character voices when there's dialogue and keeps the energy high. Phelps paints a chilling portrait of a brilliant sociopath who kills and then goes home for milk and cookies. Charles's narration gives listeners a chilling look into the killer's psyche. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2008]
