Ed Sala's clear, evenly paced narration perfectly contrasts the diverse characters in this Western. He ably reflects the violent and amoral Jesse Stark, the ruthlessness of wealthy Harve Baker, and the gentle spirit of haunted Neville Blaine, aka Clay Adams, who strives to bring fairness and equality to this rough life. Of course, there's also a romantic side to the tale, with competition between Harve and Clay for the heart of Melany. The gripping story requires Sala to slow down occasionally to punctuate plot points, and this allows listeners to catch their breath. Sala makes the listener feel as if he's relaying an exciting yarn to an old friend. S.C.A. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2008]
