LOCKIE LEONARD Legend

Earphones Award Winner

by | Read by Stig Wemyss

Young Adult • 3.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1997

Lockie Leonard might be a Harry Potter for older kids. There is rock music interspersed throughout the story (without being intrusive), which is sure to appeal to most young adults. Lockie is a surfer who helps his family cope when his mother is hospitalized. We identify him as he cares for his siblings, loses and surprisingly regains his girlfriend, and literally grows up. Winton peppers the novel with humor, teen jokes and lingo, as well as "Australianisms" that add to the appeal. Narrator Wemyss successfully keeps a typical tale interesting with his lively delivery. He is believable as a cop, all types of kids and the "oldies." An outstanding choice for teens. S.G.B. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 00]
