Detective Jake Hines returns in the fourth installment of Gunn’s mystery series. This time around, Jake finds himself in the midst of a growing depression brought on by lack of sunlight during the cold winter months in Minnesota—but also by the increasing tension between him and his girlfriend. However, he must put the bad feelings aside when two related incidents are called in, with his department head at the center of the drama. Narrator Kevin Foley delivers a powerful performance, letting the character of Hines seep into his every word. Hines is a troubled character who, nevertheless, puts the greater good before his own problems. Foley's delivery is as sturdy and steadfast as can be.
